Boko Haram attacks army base in Yobe

Nigerian troops are currently engaged in a crossfire with Boko Haram insurgents who launched an attack on a military formation in Galda, Yobe state.

A resident of the area told TheCable that the militants stormed the military base at about 7:30pm and the fighting is still on.

“As I speak to you now, there is an exchange of gunfire,” he said.

“It’s a serious battle, sounds of gunshot everywhere.”

A security source who spoke under anonymity said the insurgents, who were heading to a community within the area, attacked the soldiers when they learnt that the soldiers had already been informed ahead of their arrival.

He said the soldiers had already called for reinforcement, adding that it was a massive attack.

“Many people, including soldiers, fled for their lives,” he said.

“No doubt that there would be casualties but I don’t have any figure yet. I am sure that the military will overpower them.”

Yobe is one of the northeastern states that have recorded series of attacks from the sect, which has unleashed a violent campaign not only on Nigeria but recently other African countries.
