Boko Haram is currently attacking Maiduguri, capital of Borno state, as well as Monguno, another town in the state.
The attack comes less than a day after President Goodluck Jonathan left the state capital to campaign for re-election.
Soldiers were “repelling the simultaneous attacks” as at the time of reporting.
“Troops are repelling a simultaneous attack on Monguno and Maiduguri by terrorists,” the defence headquarters said.

Reuters quoted Rachel Adamu, who lives around Njimtilo as saying, “Please pray for us, we are in danger, under serious attack now.”
The insurgents last attempted to take Maiduguri from the same area in December 2013 and attacked a nearby army and air force base.
Reuters said shelling was heard and military helicopters were circling the city.
BBC reported the attack as well, saying “fierce fighting” was taking place on the outskirts of the city in the bid of insurgents to take it over.
