Dream Team VI win U-23 AFCON

Samson Siasia’s Dream Team VI have emerged winners of the Confederation of African football (CAF) Under-23 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Two goals from Oghenekaro Etebo – a penalty in the 15th minute and a solo run that ended in a delicate finish in the 40th minute – rendered Algeria’s solitary goal – an own goal either side of Nigeria’s goals – mere consolation.

Etebo’s brace brought his tally in the tournament to five, making him the highest goal scorer in not only this year’s edition but in the history of the tournament.

Algeria had a penalty on 68 minutes after Ndifreke Effiong fouled Amokrane in the 18-yard box, but – for the second time in the competition – Emmanuel Daniel saved a spot kick, coolly parrying Ferhat’s shot, which was then cleared by his defenders.

‘Les Fennecs’ threatened further but Daniel made a string of impressive saves to keep the score 2-1 at half time, and also by the blast of final whistle.

South Africa will join Nigeria and Algeria to represent the continent at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, after beating hosts Senegal 3-1 on penalties in the third-place match played earlier on Saturday.
