Unknown gunmen have killed 36 miners in Bindim, a community in Maru local government area of Zamfara state.

A source told TheCable that the tragic incident occurred late Monday.

The victims were said to have been ambushed at a mine location.

Abdulaziz Yari, governor of the state, confirmed the statement, vowing that the perpetrators would not go unpunished.

The high rate of insecurity in the north-western state has been a source of concern.

In July, the federal government deployed hundreds of soldiers to Zamfara to combat armed gangs that were terrorising residents of the state.

The armed bandits have killed dozens of residents while also rustling cattle.

President Muhammadu Buhari also visited the state to launch a military offensive to “flush out” the bandits.
