The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will take the final decision on Saturday over the 2015 elections following advice from the National Council of State that it should discharge its “civic” responsibility.
The council on Thursday had decided not to push for the postponement of the elections despite concerns raised over security and possible disenfranchisement of one-third of registered voters.
Attahiru Jega, a professor and chairman of INEC, had been invited to brief the council on the preparedness of the commission to conduct the general election.
“As a follow-up to that meeting, the commission has scheduled a consultative meeting with chairmen and secretaries of all registered political parties, as well as a meeting with the resident electoral commissioners (RECs) on Saturday, February 7, 2015,” Kayode Idowu, Jega’s spokesman, said in a statement on Friday.

He said the commission would address a press conference to brief the nation on its decision “with regard to whether or not the general election will hold as currently scheduled”.
