Court orders transfer of Melaye to Abuja

Nasir Ajanah, chief judge of Kogi state, has granted an interim order for Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, to be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja.

Ajanah said this at the high court in Lokoja on Friday, explaining that the hearing for the bail conditions of the senator would hold on Monday.

He said this when Mike Ozekhome, counsel to Melaye, filed processes for motion seeking the bail of the senator.

Melaye is standing trail for conspiracy and gun running. A magistrate court had denied him bail, ruling that he should be in custody of the police till June 11.

The chief judge explained that the relocation order is to enable the senator receive medical attention, following the lack of facilities at the Police Clinic, Lokoja, where he is currently being held.

He added that the interim order became necessary because of the absence of a prison that has the required health facilities that will take care of the condition of Melaye.

Describing the case as one that present an interesting scenario, Ajanah ordered the commissioner of police to be served through his counsel in court.

Earlier in his submission for bail, Ozekhome asked for a speedy trial because of the “critical” health condition of his client.

He requested that his client be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja for proper medical care, before the next adjourned date.

Ozekhome, through a consolidated motion, added that only the living stands trial and urged the prosecution counsel to heed to the request to save the life of his client.

Represented by I.E Otome, Alex Iziyon, the prosecution counsel, did not object to the consolidated motion but made a variation on the application to allow Melaye to be taken to National Hospital, Abuja.

The case was adjourned till Monday for parties to argue for the bail condition of Melaye.
