PHOTOS: Fire guts Kogi house of assembly chamber

Parts of the Kogi state house of assembly complex in Lokoja have been gutted by fire.

TheCable understands that the incident occurred on Monday morning — but the cause of the inferno is yet to be ascertained.

Salau Ozigi, director of the Kogi Fire Service, said the fire did not extend beyond the chamber and gallery of the assembly complex.

A security guard at the complex told TheCable that the fire started around 7am.

As of the time of filing this report, the inferno had abated.

Jerry Omodara, the special adviser on security to the Kogi state governor, who was at the scene, refused to speak with journalists on the possible cause of the fire.

Mathew Kolawole, speaker of the Kogi assembly, told TheCable that fire will not affect the sitting of the assembly, noting that the mace was not destroyed.

“We got a call this morning from our people here. We are leaving the security people here to do their job,” he said.

“This does not affect the sitting. The mace is not affected and we can actually sit anywhere and conduct our legislative activities.”

The speaker added that security operatives will investigate the incident to unravel the cause.
