Manchester City have emerged the 2020/2021 English Premier League (EPL) champions — regaining their title from Liverpool to win the top flight for the third time in four years.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the league after Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Leicester at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Luke Thomas’ opener was cancelled by Mason Greenwood’s goal while Caglar Soyuncu’s second-half header won the game for Leicester City and handed City an unassailable 10-point lead ahead of second-placed United at the top of the league with three games left to the end of the season.

“This has been a season and a Premier League title like no other. This was the hardest one. We will always remember this season for the way we won. I am so proud to be the manager here and of this group of players,” Guardiola said.

“They are so special. To come through this season, with all the restrictions and difficulties we’ve faced – and show the consistency we have is remarkable. It is relentless.

“Every single day, they are there, fighting for success, trying always to be better. They have been so, so resilient.”

The Blue side of Manchester won 21 consecutive matches in all competitions between mid-December and early March to pull clear of their domestic rivals, setting an English top-flight record in the process.

The title is City’s seventh in the top flight and fifth since the inception of the EPL in 1992. It is also Guardiola’s third Premier League title and eight major trophies since taking charge of the club in 2016.

The Cityzens are also second in the all-time list behind Man United who have won 20 titles in the top flight and 13 in the EPL era.
