Mob breaks into Abuja NYSC camp, loots mattresses

A mob invaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Kubwa, Abuja, on Tuesday, looting some items.

The mob was said to have arrived at the camp early Tuesday morning before blocking the road.

In videos of the scene shared on social media, some were seen scaling the fence of the camp while residents in the area joined in the looting.

People were seen carting away items such as bags of food and mattresses.

A witness said the looting started shortly after some of the youth invaded the camp with sticks and other arms before residents joined them.

TheCable could not immediately reach the NYSC for comments on the incident which is coming on the heels of similar mob actions across the country.

On Monday, some people broke into a warehouse in Abuja containing COVID-19 palliatives — a day after security agencies foiled an attempt to loot relief items in another facility in the nation’s capital.

This is despite the claim of the federal capital territory (FCT) administration that there are no COVID-19 relief items in any store in the city.

Warehouses containing COVID-19 palliatives have been raided in at least seven states, including Lagos where the looting began last week.

The palliatives were donated by CACOVID, a private-sector driven coalition set up to support the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However in the course of the mob actions, some privately-owned stores as well as unrelated government facilities — such as the NYSC camp — have been invaded with valuable items looted.
