Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was expelled from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Ogun state chapter of the party has said, countering his claim that he voluntarily resigned his membership.
Obasanjo had, at a meeting with members of the party from his Abeokuta north ward on Monday, returned his membership card, saying he no longer wished to belong to any party.
The card was then torn by Sunmonu Oladunjoye, the ward chairman.
But the Ogun state chapter of PDP has now said the former president was expelled for anti-party activities.

Bayo Dayo, the state chairman, told journalists in Abeokuta on Monday that “the totality of the executive, leaders and members of PDP family in the Ogun hereby state categorically as from today Monday 16 February, 2015, Obasanjo Aremu Olusegun stands expelled and excommunicated from the party thereby losing all rights previous, privileges and respect of our teeming party members.”
He said Obasanjo’s ward had earlier sent a letter dated February 12, 2015 to express concerns at his “anti-party activities” and “uncomplimentary utterances” targeted at the leader of the party, President Goodluck Jonathan.
One of the reasons Obasanjo is said to have fallen out with Jonathan was the prominent role given to Buruji Kashamu in south-west PDP.

Kashamu, a former associate of Obasanjo, is also from Ogun state and has been facing drug-related charges in the US in the last 15 years.
