Spanish priest dies of Ebola

The first European infected by Ebola has died.

Spanish priest Miguel Pajares died in hospital, a spokesperson from Madrid health authorities said on Tuesday, according to a Reuters report.

Pajares, 75, was airlifted from Liberia on August 7 after contracting the disease while working for a non-governmental organisation there.

He was repatriated with co-worker Juliana Bohi, a nun who tested negative to the disease.

Both were working for a non-governmental organisation in the West African country.

The Spanish health ministry initially said Pajares was responding to treatment at Carlos III hospital, and his death on Tuesday morning would not have been envisaged.

The late priest was receiving the experimental ZMapp drug, which had been administered on two infected American medics with significant success.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the drug had been sent to Liberia, as part of measures to combat a virus the World Health Organisation (WHO) says has now claimed more than 1, 000 lives.
