Trump calls Buhari, promises to send ventilators to Nigeria

President Donald Trump had a telephone conversation with President Muhammadu Buhari earlier on Tuesday, solidarising with Nigeria over the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Lai Mohammed, minister of information, who disclosed this at the media briefing of the presidential task force on COVID-19, the US president promised to send across ventilators to Nigeria.

The minister said Buhari briefed the US president about the steps Nigeria is taking to curb the spread of the disease.

“President Muhammadu Buhari today had a phone conversation with President Donald Trump, at the request of the American President,” he said.

“The conversation centred on Nigeria’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. President Buhari used the opportunity to brief the American President on the steps that Nigeria is taking to contain the spread of the disease.

“On his part, President Trump assured that the United States stand in solidarity with Nigeria in this difficult time and promised to send ventilators to support the country in its fight against the pandemic. President Trump also extends his best regards to the people of Nigeria.”

Nigeria currently has 1,337 coronavirus cases after 11,426 tests while the US has 1,013,508 cases after 5,718,891 tests.

  1. Donald Trump puts a call across to Buhari and this became the headlines of some tabloids in Nigeria… Shame!

I do not hold a thing against Trump; frankly, I love the guy for his guts and I admire his sometimes brazen bluntness. It is however obvious that Buhari’s aides consider this gesture worth celebrating because some of Trump’s comments and body language had shown that he wasn’t particularly fond of Buhari. But don’t dance too much. Boosting the American economy had and still is one of Trump’s key agendas. Now with elections in sight, the nasty coronavirus comes to ruin his plans.

How else would a smart guy save the day? Global oil prices have plummeted. Stranded on the seas, Nigeria’s oil suffers the same fate. The virus makes havoc to Nigeria’s economy. When this quagmire clears, Nigeria would desperately look for buyers. Better sell at a loss than not at all… And maybe that’s when the good old Donald would come along, offering ridiculously low prices to Nigeria so that he could avail Americans nice cheap petroleum.

And c’mon, who says Nigeria wouldn’t sell to him! Haven’t you got no memory? He offered you free ventilators after all…

And he just returned the Abacha loot…Good timing!
