Brett Kavanaugh sworn in as US supreme court justice

Brett Kavanaugh has been sworn in as a justice of the US supreme court.

Kavanaugh was confirmed justice on Saturday, putting an end to the battle between Republicans and Democrats over his nomination.

President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh in July to replace Anthony Kennedy who retired from active service, after 30 years as associate justice of the apex court.

“My judicial philosophy is straightforward: a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law,” Kavanaugh had said after being nominated.

“A judge must interpret statutes as written. And a judge must interpret the Constitution as written, informed by history, and tradition and precedent.”

Kavanaugh’s nomination for the position, however, suffered setback after he was accused of sexually assaulting Christine Ford, an American professor of psychology.

The US senate voted 50 to 48 (Republicans to Democrats respectively) to confirm his nomination, making him the 114th justice of the court.

“I applaud and congratulate the U.S. Senate for confirming our GREAT NOMINEE, Judge Brett Kavanaugh, to the United States Supreme Court. Later today, I will sign his Commission of Appointment, and he will be officially sworn in. Very exciting!” Trump wrote on Twitter to congratulate 53-year-old Kavanaugh.
