Buhari to ‘heed call of Nigerians’ on Wednesday

Muhammadu Buhari, a former military president, will formally declare his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday, Jasper Azuatalam, chairman of Buhari Vanguard said in an electronic message to TheCable on Monday.

In a speech on September 30, Buhari had revealed that he would run for president because of the strong urging of his supporters  and Nigerians who are in dire need of good governance.

Confirming the interest of the former head of state in vying for president a fourth time, Azuatalam called on Nigerians to be part of the formal declaration.

“We are pleased to inform Nigerians that Gen Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) has finally answered the call by Nigerians and has accepted to run for the 2015 presidency,” he said.

“Gen Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) appreciates the overwhelming support he is receiving from Nigerians across different religions and geopolitical zones. Buhari thanks, in particular, Ndi Igbo and Christians, for the unprecedented and overwhelming reception given to him at the Sam Mbakwe airport Owerri and the Catholic Church in Imo State University, Owerri where  Owelle Rochas Okorocha gave out the hand of his daughter in marriage on Saturday, October 11 2014.

“We shall lay the cards on the table on Wednesday for Nigerians to see and make an informed selection. Our campaign will be based on issues and ideas. Our references will be on verifiable records and existing examples. Our promises shall be practical and feasible.

“Adequate security of lives and properties, zero tolerance to corruption, poverty eradication, job creation and the restoration of discipline in the public service shall be Gen Muhammadu Buhari’s foremost priorities among other numerous concerns.

“Every available parameter indicates that Nigerians are tired of the Peoples Democratic Party and President Goodluck Jonathan-led government that have performed far below expectations. Nigerians are yearning for positive change away from the abysmal performance of President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP.

“Muhammadu Buhari is aware of the herculean task ahead and will put in his best as he has always done to rescue Nigerians and put our nation back in the right track. We welcome you all to this historic occasion that will usher the emergence of a new and prosperous Nigeria under the presidency of Muhammadu Buhari come May 29, 2015.”

Buhari’s public declaration of interest in the presidential election was earlier scheduled for Wednesday October 8, but Audu Ogbeh, coordinator of the event and former PDP chairman, announced its postponement to Wednesday, October 15.

    1. Dead on arrival….. no more room for Dictators. Nigeria is now a democracy. Buhari has no moral rights to be a Nigerian President. His constitutional right to contest the election is also questionable. He was a saboteur of our democracy. We have rejected him time after time. We will reject him again and put an end to his born to rule mentality.

      1. You will reject him from your US base? George or whatever is not really realistic here. How do you call Buhari a saboteur of ‘your democracy’? What has he really done to deserve such appellation from someone who is using another man’s country to fire vitriol on a personality of Muhammadu Buhari and only uses social media to track the string of events in Nigeria. Perhaps I will tutor you a bit on the persona of the man Buhari. He came in as your Military President when Nigeria was just at a verge of submerge arising from larger-than life style of your Politicians then. He restored discipline and straighten the ways of reasoning of Nigerians. Corruption was just eclipsing when the regime was abruptly terminated and reign of blind looting resumed………they said Tunde Idiagbon was the one ruling underground. Whichever, it was Buhari’s Government irrespective of who was rocking the paddle. Since that 1985 the man Buhari was pushed aside….here we are. I don’t have anything against anybody, but my belief is that Buhari is seeing something you and I are not seeing. For this country to return back to its glory, you need a leader that will clash with corruption and possibly the corrupt elements in this country. This paddy-paddy style of democracy and luck-based leadership succession may not take this country quite far. You need a strong personality that will build strong institutions that you and I desire. Don’t forget that age goes with leadership maturity. Guess what was Buhari’s age when he ruled this country from 1983-1985? compare that with his age now that he still believes he can still give back to the country. He is actually seeing something we are not seeing. May God help this country.
