President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Samuel Adebayo, a major-general in the army, as the head of the defence intelligence agency.

According to NAN, Adebayo took over the helm of affairs of the agency from Gbolahan Oyefesobi, deputy chief of defence intelligence, at a ceremony held in Abuja on Friday.

Muhammadu Usman, an air vice marshal, had handed over to Oyefesobi following his retirement from active service.

Speaking at the event, the new defence intelligence chief said much needs to be done in gathering information that could make the country safe.

“Security agencies are also doing their best, but much more still needs to be done,” Adebayo said.

“In particular, the DIA has continued to raise the bar in the intelligence state craft, and considering the achievements of the former CDI, I know that the task ahead is daunting but clearly achievable.

“I, therefore, solicit your support, suggestions, and advice as we settle down to work, as leadership is about team work, transparency and integrity.

“I want to see a DIA with cutting edge capacity to deliver its mandate to the Nigerian people.”

Adebayo also noted that his goal is to ensure quality service delivery in the agency.

“My vision is to raise the bar of the defence intelligence agency in security circles. We shall also deliver on the DIA mandate, and enhance the technical intelligence capacity through acquisition of intelligence enablers,” he added.

Earlier, Oyefesobi called on staff of the agency to support Adebayo as he pilots its affairs.
