President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment Yusuf Maina-Bukar as the director-general of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW).
The appointment was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Saghir El-Mohammed, spokesman of the federal ministry of environment.
The NAGGW, which is under the ministry of environment, was established in 2015 by an act of parliament.
It is related to the Great Green Wall initiative in Africa, which was conceived in 2007 by the African Union to address land degradation, boost food security and support communities to adapt to climate change in sub-Saharan Africa.

Maina-Bukar is a lecturer at the department of geography in Yobe State University.
According to the statement, he has experience in climate change adaptation and that his tenure will begin on April 4 and last for four years.
Maina-Bukar is said to hold a doctorate from the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, master of science degree from the University of Dundee in UK and a bachelor’s degree in urban and regional planning from the Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, Kaduna state.

“Yusuf has expertise in Climate Change Adaption and Sustainable Development,” the statement reads.
“Yusuf is a member of the Nigerian Environmental Society. His appointment is for a four-year term and takes effect from April 4, 2022.”
