President Muhammadu Buhari has turned down a move to buy him five new armoured Mercedes  S-600 (V222) cars.

The cars were estimated at N400 million.

The proposal had been announced on Wednesday by the permanent secretary of the state house, Nebolisa Emodi.

The president, sources said, turned it down, saying:  “I don’t need any new cars. The ones I’m using now are just fine.”

The proposal to buy the new cars was first made to President Goodluck Jonathan before he left office but he said it should be re-presented to Buhari for approval, sources said.

They were to be delivered a couple of months to the change in government before Jonathan put it on hold.

Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, confirmed the development.
