Buhari has the trappings of an unrepentant dictator, says Fasehun

Frederick Fasehun, founder of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), says the Friday night raid by the Department of State Services (DSS) on the houses of seven judges is proof that President Muhammadu Buhari is not the converted democrat he claimed to be in the buildup to the 2015 presidential election.

Buhari has faced criticism from a section of the public for the DSS raid, with the likes of Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, and the national assembly accusing him of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies.

He has been supported as well by another group that believes the DSS action did not violate the provisions of the Act setting it up.

Fasehun belongs to the latter group, and has expressed worries that security operatives were habitually breaching due process in their fight against corruption.

“It is unfortunate that President Buhari represented “the worst threat to our nation’s democracy,” Punch quoted him as saying while addressing journalists on the DSS invasion on judges’ residences.

Although he expressed support for the war against corruption, Fasehun described the invasion of the homes of the judges as “gross and “blatant violation of the rule of law, the Nigerian constitution and common sense”.

The implored Buhari to immediately caution Lawal Daura, director-general of the DSS.

“These current events have vindicated my stance when I expressed scepticism on the Buhari presidential candidacy in 2015.

“When, in the buildup to the elections, his spin doctors told the world that General Buhari was a born-again democrat, we warned Nigerians that this leopard cannot change his spots. Buhari has the trappings of an unrepentant dictator.”
