President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of P. T. Boroh, a retired brigadier-general, as coordinator of the amnesty programme for former Niger Delta militants.
Boroh, whose appointment takes immediate effect, is to take over the responsibilities of the former special adviser to President Jonathan on Niger Delta, who also doubled as coordinator of the amnesty programme.
“The appointment of a new coordinator for the amnesty programme is expected to lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in its implementation such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants,” Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and publicity, said in a statement.
The move will be welcome news to the Niger Delta region, which Buhari had been accused by his opponents of neglecting. he was asked last week during his US trip to make comments on his plans for the region, and his answer on focusing more on the regions that gave him high votes in the election led to backlash from the public.
