Buhari revokes Yar’Adua’s policy on civil service tenureship

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of tenureship in the federal civil service.

The late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua introduced the policy which prescribed a term of four years (renewable once) for permanent secretaries and eight years for directors.

With the new policy, they will now stay until they are 35 years in service or attain the age 60, whichever comes first.

Winifred Oyo-Ita, head of the civil service of the federation, conveyed Buhari’s directive in a statement issued on Monday, saying it was with immediate effect.

The directive was contained in a circular to all ministries departments and agencies,” read the statement signed on Oyo-Ita’s behalf by Haruna Imrana, director communication at the office of the head of service of the federation.

“The circular which conveyed the president’s directive on the suspension said the suspension is with immediate effect and all concerned are to comply accordingly.”

  1. Its better that this policy is limited to core civil service. If not, most parastatals any agencies of government will perish.
