President Muhammadu Buhari has sent a get-well message to Pope Francis, head of the Catholic Church, as the cleric undergoes a colon surgery.
In a statement by Garba Shehu, the president’s spokesperson, Buhari urged Nigerians and the global community to pray for the Pope as he undergoes the routine operation.
“The President called for prayers from Nigerians and the global community. He wishes him quick recovery,” the statement reads.
On Sunday, Pope Francis was taken to A. Gemelli Policlinic in Rome, where he is scheduled to undergo surgery for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.

He had recited the Angelus, a devotion commemorating the incarnation of Jesus Christ into human flesh, before he left Casa Santa Marta, Vatican city, on Sunday afternoon.
According to Vatican News, Matteo Bruni, director of the pontiff’s press office, confirmed the development through a statement to journalists on Sunday.
“This afternoon, His Holiness Pope Francis was taken to A. Gemelli Policlinic in Rome where he will undergo a scheduled surgery for a symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.”
