President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration will allocate more resources to improve the education sector.

Speaking on Thursday while receiving the proprietress and students of a school in Daura, Katsina state, the president said that improving quality of education will continue to be his priority.

In a statement by Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Buhari emphasised the importance of character, while he asked the pupils not to lose sight of their aspirations.

“We will allocate an increasing share of resources to improve learning in the country in our effort to reform the educational sector,” he said.

Celine Friday, proprietress of the school, commended the president for giving “special attention” to education.

She also asked the federal government to assist private schools in rural communities.

The federal government had allocated N742.5 billion, representing 5.6 percent of the 2021 budget, to the educational sector.

Stakeholders had criticised the budgetary allocation, saying it does not meet the 15 to 20 percent benchmark proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for the education sector.
