Taiwo Awoniyi, Nigerian striker, was on Sunday rushed to hospital after suffering a severe head injury while playing for Mainz 05 in the German Bundesliga.
The 22-year-old Liverpool loanee appeared motionless for a while after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge with Felix Uduokhai, Augsburg defender, in the 18th minute.
The bulky forward was stretched off the field in a neck brace after he was said to have suffered concussion which required urgent medical attention.
The match was delayed for several minutes and a stadium applause was given to him via the public address system while he was stretchered off the pitch.

Shortly after, Mainz 05 took to its Twitter page to update fans on the former Mouscron striker’s condition. The club confirmed that he suffered a concussion and would be spending the night in the hospital.
“Our striker Taiwo Awoniyi suffered a concussion in his collision with @FCA_World’s Felix Udokhai and will spend the night in hospital as a precautionary measure. Get well soon, Taiwo,” the tweet read.
Awoniyi, signed by Liverpool in 2015, has started all Mainz’s four games since resumption of the German Bundesliga. He has scored one goal in twelve league appearance for the club this season.

Mainz 05 would go on to succumb to a 0-1 defeat to Augsburg through a first-minute goal.
