CAF Champions League: Rivers secure emphatic 3-0 victory

Guy Kuemian was the hero for Rivers United in their CAF Champions League match against Al-Merreikh of Sudan.

His brace and another goal by Esosa Igbinoba secured a 3-0 victory for the home side.

Rivers United was clearly the better side and nearly got the lead as early as the first minute of the game but Lukman Mohammed’s goal-bound shot was cleared off the line.

The home team continued its push for the opening goal and were rewarded with Kueiman’s first goal in the 15th minute.

He completed his brace a minute later to give his team a 2-0 healthy lead in the first half.

The onslaught continued in the second half and Igbinoba got on the scoresheet with less than 10 minutes to the end of the game.

The Sudanese had their chances with Bakary Babeecar almost getting on the scoresheet in the first half but goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi saved the ball with the help of the upright bar.

Former Dolphins striker, Kelechi Osunwa, was marked out in the first half and it came as no surprise when he failed to emerge from the dressing room for the second half.

The victory has put Rivers United in a good position to qualify for the group stage ahead of the second leg next weekend in Sudan.
