California ‘liberals’ want state out of US over Trump’s victory

A group of California liberals, horrified at Donald Trump’s win of the presidential election, is taking the first steps toward what it hopes will be the next big secession movement.

Mobilisng people under the Yes California Independence Campaign, the liberals hope to place an initiative on California’s 2018 ballot that would call for a special election to decide whether the state should secede to form the country.

The Yes California website states: “We advocate for peaceful secession from the United States by use of an independence referendum to establish a mandate, followed by a nationwide campaign to advocate in support of a constitutional exit from the Union.

“In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment, and to the detriment of our children.

“In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave the international community with their ‘Brexit’ vote. Our ‘Calexit’ referendum is about California joining the international community.”

More than 20,000 people have liked the group’s Facebook page since it launched Tuesday night. Supporters said Trump’s election has helped spur the new movement.

Calexit has been trending on social media.

“I no longer identify as being an American citizen from now just Californian make #Calexit happen along with the rest of the Westcoast,” read a tweet from the handle @SaveTheYoukai.

“California should secede. We are the richest state in the US. Therefore it is strong enough to be its own country.#Calexit,” one Valerie tweeted via @youremegabasic.

“#Calexit is trending…California is the 6th largest economy in the world. I’d vote for it. We’d be great on our own. #sorryamerica,” EscobarSeason @Esco417, wrote.

“Can the entire west coast just secede from the rest of the country? Let’s make it happen, people! #CalExit #Election2016,” another person tweeted.

In the spring of 2019, Californians will go to the polls in a historic vote to decide by referendum if California should exit the Union, but secession will be extraordinarily hard.

An 1869 supreme court ruling called Texas v. White suggests that there are only two ways for a state to leave the union: “through revolution or through consent of the States.”

Thousands trooped to the streets after Trump was declared winner of the election. The billionaire businessman initially blamed the protests on the media, but later appealed to aggrieved persons to come together.

Hillary Clinton, his rival, has also been suing for calm. Admitting that though she is going through a tough period, the Democratic candidate said it was time to close the ranks and think of the common interest of the country.
