Justin Trudeau
Justin Trudeau, Canadian prime minister, has promised to respond firmly if US President Donald Trump follows through on his proposal to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports.
Trump announced plans to introduce a 25 percent tariff on all steel and aluminium imports into the United States starting on March 12.
Canada, the largest exporter of both metals to the US, is expected to be significantly affected.
Speaking on Tuesday at an artificial intelligence summit in France, Trudeau described the tariffs as “entirely unjustified” and warned that Canada would defend its interests.

“Canadians will stand up strongly and firmly if we need to,” Trudeau said.
The announcement marks the latest trade dispute between the US and Canada since Trump took office a month ago.
His first tariff measure targeted Canada and Mexico, with a 25 percent levy on all imported goods from the two countries. Both nations responded with swift retaliatory actions.

The tensions eased temporarily after meetings between Trump and the leaders of Canada and Mexico, which resulted in a 30-day pause on the measures.
Trump, however, has made it clear he is undeterred by potential retaliation from his trade partners.
