The Squirrels of Benin Republic on Sunday defeated Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles 1-0 in a CHAN-qualifier.
The home side dictated the pace of the game from the blast of the whistle but it wasn’t until the 29th minute when they came close to scoring. A close range header drew gasps from the spectators as it sailed over the bar.
The first half ended 0-0 with Nigerian side on the front foot, having carved out some chances and caused panic in Benin’s vital area.
Kingsley Eduwo wasted an easy tap in opportunity for the Eagles in the 68th minute.

As the Eagles continued to see more of the ball, Ibrahim Alhassan, in the 75th minute, waltzed his way into the box but tripped at the crucial moment.
Captain/goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa pulled a good save for Nigeria before the Squirrels were awarded a penalty in the 88th minute.
Mama Seibou converted the spot kick for the home side a minute later.

The second leg comes up at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano on August 19.
