Kogi to take custody of children hawking during school hours

Wemi Jones, Kogi commissioner for education, science and technology, says any child found hawking during school hours will be taken into the custody of the state.

Speaking at a stakeholder’s sensitisation meeting on Thursday, Jones said the decision is in line with the recently-passed Kogi education law.

The Kogi state house of assembly passed the bill into law in September 2020.

The commissioner noted that such children will be kept with the state, while the parents or guardians will be expected to provide an explanation for the child’s absence in school.

“If any child is seen hawking during school hours, that child shall be apprehended by the special marshals that will be put in place,” NAN quoted the commissioner as saying.

“The parents or guardian of such child must come to give reasons why the child is not in school, and we are very serious about this.”

On the operations of private schools Jones said the affected institutions should register with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

He added that educational facilities operating illegally would be closed down as stipulated in the new education law, and called for the cooperation of all school owners to improve the quality of learning in the state.
