Cholera outbreak: LASCOPA directs stores to display products’ essential information

LASCOPA wants products critical information displayed to curb spread of cholera.

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has directed all supermarkets and stores in the state to ensure essential information about consumable products is prominently displayed as a strategy to curtail the spread of cholera.

Lagos has recorded 29 deaths and 43 confirmed cases of cholera as of June 23.

In a statement on Wednesday, Toyin Oni, the spokesperson, said Afolabi Solebo, general manager of LASCOPA, directed that the NAFDAC registration number be displayed on products to ascertain whether they have undergone regulatory approval.

Oni quoted Solebo as saying that the manufacturing and expiration dates of products must be conspicuously provided to show transparency on their shelf life.

“Solebo informed that the manufacturer’s address must also be included on products at all supermarkets in the state to facilitate traceability and accountability,” the statement reads.

“He warned that failure to comply with these regulations would result in the immediate closure of the affected supermarkets or stores.

“The General Manager maintained that the PLO proactive measure is crucial in preventing the spread of cholera and ensuring consumers have access to safe and regulated products.

“He restated the agency’s commitment to protecting consumers’ rights and ensuring adherence to health standards during this critical period.

“LASCOPA remains dedicated to upholding consumer welfare and safety across Lagos State.”

Solebo also urged all consumers, as part of their responsibilities and rights, to remain vigilant and report any instance of non-compliance to LASCOPA for prompt action.
