The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) says the federal government should “significantly” increase budgetary allocation for people with disabilities (PWDs) in the 2024 supplementary budget and the 2025 budget.
Auwal Rafsanjani, executive director of the civil society organisation (CSO), said in a statement that an increased budgetary allocation will help to promote disability inclusion and make it possible for PWDs to contribute more to Nigeria’s development.
Rafsanjani said the government has provided for some of the needs of PWDs, adding that more still needs to be done.
However, he said the implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act signed in 2018 and the 2024 appropriation bill has been hindered by poor funding.

He said the current budgetary allocation is not enough to meet the needs of more than 30 million Nigerians with disabilities, thereby making it difficult for them to access essential services.
Rafsanjani called on the government to speed up the implementation of the existing laws to better the lives of the Nigerian disability community.
He emphasised CISLAC’s commitment to disability advocacy while calling on stakeholders to continue to promote an “inclusive society where every Nigerian, irrespective of their abilities, can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development”.
