City draw… Chelsea, United win slim

Goals from Gary Cahill – awarded after the Goal Decision System proved the ball had crossed the line – and Diego Costa’s 10th of the season gave Chelsea the points despite Emre Can scoring his first goal for Liverpool to put the reds ahead.

The Blues came from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1 at Anfield and maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Can’s shot was deflected off Cahill’s shoulder past Thibaut Courtois in goal for Chelsea, but five minutes later, the Chelsea defender reacted quickest to score after John Terry’s header was parried by Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet.

Cahill’s shot from the rebound was caught by Mignolet but the goal-line technology system ruled the ball had crossed the line.

Costa settled the points after Mignolet parried a cross from Cesar Azpilicueta only for the Spain striker to slam in the rebound with an unstoppable low shot past two Liverpool defenders on the line.

At Old Trafford, Juan Mata came off the bench to lift Manchester United into sixth spot with a 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace.

United dominated possession without really threatening Palace’s goal and in fact Fraizer Campbell should have put the visitors ahead in the first half, only to lob his effort on to the roof of the net.

After coming in for Adnan Januzaj in the second-half, Mata grabbed the crucial goal with a left-foot shot from the edge of the area, which deflected off a Palace player and beyond Julian Speroni in goal.

At Loftus Road, in-form Sergio Aguero twice pegged back Queens Park Rangers as Manchester City left with a point.

Charlie Austin had two goals disallowed in the opening stages of the match but their luck changed in the 27th minute when Austin latched on to a through ball from new signing Eduardo Vargas and fired past Joe Hart.

City hit back 10 minutes later through Aguero after the striker latched onto a through ball from Eliaquim Mangala and dribbled past Steven Caulker before lashing the ball past Rob Green.

The hosts retook the lead in the 75th minute when Martin Demichelis accidentally headed a cross from Mauricio Isla into his own net but the visitors levelled the scores through Aguero with eight minutes left on the clock.

QPR are in 19th place with 8 points, while that same figure separates third-placed City from first-placed Chelsea.

Southampton are in second, four points ahead of Manchester City.

Two goals in five minutes from Shane Long gave the Saints a hard-fought 2-0 win over Leicester at St. Mary’s.

Leicester’s tactics – a narrow defence meant to stifle Southampton’s trademark attacks through the middle of the pitch – worked for the majority of the game and the Saints’ only chance of scoring in the first-half saw Sadio Mane shoot over from a tight angle.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman substituted him for Long in the 68th and the newcomer broke through Leicester’s defence seven minutes later, curling a low shot beyond Kasper Schmeichel.

Mane made sure of victory in the 80th, guiding the ball past Schmeichel after Victor Wanyama picked him out.

Burnley won their first league match since 2010, Ashley Barnes’s second-half header enough to give them a 1-0 win over Hull City – their first victory of the season.
