‘Four soldiers’ killed as gunmen attack Anambra community

Gunmen have attacked Umunze community in Orumba South LGA of Anambra and reportedly killed four soldiers and a civilian.

According to NAN, the gunmen arrived in a Toyota Sienna vehicle and attacked the soldiers at a checkpoint opposite Zenith Bank in Umunze at about 12:40pm on Wednesday.

A civilian was said to have been accidentally hit by a bullet during the attack, while several people around the scene sustained varying degrees of injuries.

When contacted, Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, did not respond to questions concerning the attack.

The development comes weeks after gunmen attacked the convoy of Ifeanyi Ubah, senator representing Anambra south senatorial district.

The attack, which happened at Nkwo Enugu Ukwu, Njikoka LGA of Anambra, left police officers and some aides of the senator dead.

A similar attack happened in Oye-Agu Abagana on July 16 when gunmen ambushed and killed two police officers and a civilian.

In a statement by Christian Aburime, his spokesman, Chukwuma Soludo, governor of Anambra, described the Umunze attack as “wicked and cruel”, adding that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

“We are not going to rest on our oars, including those people that attacked Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and the rest. There will be absolutely no hiding place for them,” he said.

“Going forward, our actions will show, as these people must surely pay for this heinous and repulsive attack.”
