Close contact of Bauchi gov tests positive for coronavirus

A 62-year-old friend of Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi state, has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19).

Aliyu Maigoro, the state commissioner for health, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday.

The governor had tested positive for coronavirus on Tuesday.

Mohammed has been in self-isolation after allegedly shaking hands with a son of Atiku Abubakar, former vice-president, who also tested positive for the virus.

The commissioner did not mention the name of the new case.

“Today, 26 March, 2020, the state has recorded a second confirmed case of coronavirus,” the commissioner said.

“Out of the 48 highly risk persons tested, two have been confirmed positive. 37 returned negative and we are awaiting the results of nine samples.

“We are now tracing the contacts of the second case. I will not disclose the identity of the person because it is unethical though the governor ordered us to disclose his identity.”

The state now has two cases of COVID-19.

Maigoro said the two index cases are not showing symptoms of the virus. He added that the second case has been isolated and has begun treatment.

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had announced that the number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached 51.
