Commissioner says corrupt public officials must die

Taraba State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ate Kundu, believes capital punishment is the only means of checkmating corruption and making government officials accountable.

Commenting on a proposal by some delegates at the ongoing national confab, Kundu argued that the death sentence is the only viable option for tackling corruption in the country, saying he is ready to give up his life if there is any evidence to prove that he is corruptible.

“The proposal should be implemented because any delay in adopting it would be catastrophic,” Kundu said to NAN.

“I am strongly in support of the view of some delegates at the confab who proposed the death sentence on corrupt government officials.

“Corruption is a cankerworm that has destroyed our institutions. Therefore, anyone found to be involved in corruption should be hanged, even if it is me.”

He noted that the Republic of China made capital punishment as a provision in its laws to discourage government officials from corruptly enriching themselves, and therefore urged the Nigerian government to emulate its Chinese counterpart.

He also argued for the abolition of immunity clause for public officials, saying: “In the interest of democracy and the rule of law, I think the immunity clause should be removed.

“Although some people will argue that the absence of immunity will lead to a distraction in the prosecution of senior government officials, including state chief executives, such measure will put everybody in check.”
