Commissioner seeks sign language promotion in Akwa Ibom

Ini Adiakpan, the commissioner for women affairs and social welfare in Akwa Ibom, has advocated for promotion of sign language and the societal integration of persons with hearing impairment.

She made the call during the 2nd south-south Deaf Summit, organised by the Nigeria National Association of the Deaf, in Akwa Ibom.

The event held between April 10 and 13 with the theme: ‘Rebrand, Rebuild and Strategize for Greater Impact’.

Addressing the audience, the commissioner commended the deaf cluster for organising a successful summit. She emphasised the importance of fostering growth and impact within the cluster.

She harped on the need to embrace internet connectivity to access important resources and advocated for the cluster’s global competitiveness.

She appealed to the hearing impaired community to actively promote sign language within communities, while appealing for unity, adding that networking is necessary and that they should use technology to improve the cluster’s activities.

David Polycarp, chairman of the Akwa Ibom Association for the Deaf, said the state is fast becoming the most inclusive state for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Nigeria.
