Abubakar Yusuf, commissioner for health in Kano, says his ministry is committed to ending maternal mortality in the state.
A statement issued on Wednesday said Yusuf spoke while receiving a donation of reproductive health commodities and equipment from Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation.
The commissioner lamented the high counts of maternal mortality cases, pledging increased access to post-abortion care for women across all facilities in the state.
“I commend the leadership of the Ipas Country Director, Mr. Lucky Palmer, for initiatives like this and together we will continue to work to ensure no woman dies from unsafe abortion in Nigeria,’’ the statement reads.

Unsafe abortions are one of the leading causes of maternal mortality in Nigeria, contributing to up to 15 percent of maternal deaths.
Palmer, represented by Samsu Gombwer, senior advisor, programmes, said one of the partnership’s goals is to strengthen healthcare systems in the state.
“This is one of our many targeted efforts and we appreciate the partnership and support of the Kano State Ministry of Health to sustain the gains we will achieve through these donations,” the Ipas country director said.
