Commonwealth Games: Nigeria wins first medal

Nkechi Okpara bagged Nigeria’s first medal in Glasgow after winning bronze in the women’s weightlifting 48kg category.

The 18-year-old athlete finished behind Sanjita Khumukcham of India who won gold and Mirabai Chanu Saikhom also representing India won the silver medal.

Okpara, who is Nigeria’s champion in that category, won two gold medals and one silver at the 2012 National Sports Festival in Lagos.

Nigeria topped the weightlifting medal charts in 2010 edition with five gold, four silver and five bronze followed by Samoa (3, 0, 0) and India (2, 2, 4).
