Commotion as security guard kills man at Onitsha petrol station

There was commotion at Ona-Jones Oil filling station in Onitsha, Anambra state, on Friday, following the killing of a middle-aged man.

According to a witness, trouble broke out after a security guard, who reportedly tried to resolve a disagreement between the deceased and another individual, mistakenly shot the victim.

The incident, which happened around 10am, prompted the response of a mob, that attempted to set ablaze the station.

Military personnel and policemen were said to have prevented that from happening.

“Trouble started when the victim had a disagreement over N500 balance from a business transaction with an alleged GSM phone repairer near the filling station,” NAN quoted the witness as saying.

“The security guard interfered in the matter and ordered both of them to kneel down, they obeyed, but his hands touched the trigger and the bullet hit the boy and he died instantly.”

The witness said the owner of the filling station quickly alerted the police, as the incident attracted passers-by, that gathered tyres, with the motive to commit arson.

“On arrival, the military personnel and policemen cordoned-off the station, dispersed the mob, arrested the security guard and whisked him off to Ogidi police division,” the source added.

Another witness said the policemen took the corpse of the yet to be identified victim to a nearby mortuary.

Hassan Musa, divisional police officer in-charge of Ogidi, confirmed the incident, saying the security guard has been arrested.
