From convergence to victory: Two young politicians set to make a mark

BY CHINEMEREM ONUORAH

In a continent where politics is often associated with affluence, self-interest, and patriarchy, two young Nigerians have emerged as pillars of inspiration.

At just 26 years old, Rukayat Motunrayo Shittu and Muhammad Adamu Oyanki have become symbols of hope and inspiration for young people across Nigeria. The two young politicians have defied the odds to emerge victorious in the recently concluded state house of assembly elections, despite facing formidable challenges along the way.

However, the fact that Rukayat and Muhammad are young is not their sole defining characteristic. They also embody the qualities of passionate and committed leaders, who are resolute in their pursuit of creating a positive impact in their communities. Additionally, they both possess an extensive background in active leadership, which they demonstrated during their student years in their respective universities.

Despite facing several hindrances such as financial constraints, corrupt party politics, and well-established political rivals, they exemplified the adage that success can be attained through perseverance and determination. Their story testifies to the fact that young people can effect change and instil hope in others.

Rukayat, a journalist, used her platform in the media to advocate for women’s rights and responsive leadership, but she knew that real change would only come from within the political system. Undeterred by the financial, religious, and cultural barriers that often discourage young women from running for office, she embarked on a campaign that would change her life forever.

Through sheer determination, hard work, and effective use of digital media, she garnered the support of well-wishers, including the first lady of Kwara state, who provided her with resources to run her campaign. Rukayat saw every obstacle as an opportunity for growth and used her experiences to inspire other young women to follow in her footsteps. She is now the youngest female beneficiary of the Not Too Young To Run Law as a member of the Kwara state house of assembly, representing Owode/Oniru Constituency.

On his part, Muhammad learned the value of strategic planning, grassroots politics, and community engagement, through his consistent participation in politics at both secondary school and university.

Armed with a deep understanding of the needs of his constituents, he ran an issue-based campaign that focused on the issues that mattered most to his constituents. Despite facing older, more established politicians and financial constraints, Adamu’s unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in his community propelled him to victory. He is now a member-elect of the Nasarawa state house of assembly, representing the Doma constituency.

But Rukayat and Muhammad’s success can be attributed not only to their personal determination and youthfulness but also to the valuable lessons they learned at The Convergence 4.0, the largest gathering of young women and men aspiring to elective offices, organised by Yiaga Africa. The Convergence equipped them with the tools and strategies needed to run effective, issue-based campaigns focused on community engagement.

For Muhammad, the wealth of knowledge he gained from experienced politicians who spoke at the conference proved to be a pivotal factor, while for Rukayat, the opportunity to network among her peers was a significant highlight. The mentorship and guidance they received following the conference were instrumental to their campaigns. These success stories demonstrate the importance of capacity-building opportunities and the relevance of impartial stakeholders like Yiaga Africa, who provide support to young aspirants.

Rukayat and Muhammad’s stories indicate the power of young people to effect change and make a positive impact in their communities. Their success serves as a beacon of hope for young Nigerians who are optimistic about using public office to effect innovation and change in their communities and the country at large.

As they prepare to take their seats in their respective houses of assembly, Rukayat, and Muhammad have simply asked for guidance and continued support from Yiaga Africa. They testify to the immense value of The Convergence and appeal for more opportunities to build their capacities and refine their skills to make them better leaders.

Their journey has just begun, but Rukayat and Muhammad have already achieved a remarkable accomplishment. They are living proof that age is just a number and that with the right strategies and determination, anyone, regardless of their background or circumstance, can make a difference. They remain committed to their vision for a better Nigeria. While they know that the road ahead will be challenging, they are determined to overcome all obstacles and serve their constituents with passion, integrity, and commitment.
