Copa America glory for Chile

Chile beat Argentina 4-1 on penalties to secure their first major trophy in their history on home soil.

After a goalless 120 minutes in Santiago, it was Alexis Sanchez’s audacious chip from the spot that proved to be the winner after Matias Fernandez, Arturo Vidal and Charles Aranguiz had all found the target. Argentina’s Gonzalo Higuain fired over and Ever Banega was denied by Claudio Bravo.

Higuain had earlier missed from close range after 90 minutes in a match with few chances.

Chile held their nerve in the front of their fans while Argentina were poor in the shootout at the end of an equally poor performance that fell well short of the heights they reached in their 6-1 semi-final win over Paraguay.

The 2014 World Cup runners up are without a major trophy in the last 22 years since winning the 1993 Copa America in Ecuador.
