Corps member punished for ‘assaulting official’ at Bayelsa NYSC camp

Two corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kaiama camp, Bayelsa state, have been placed on disciplinary measures for physically assaulting an official.

While addressing the issue on Tuesday, Blessing Ariolu, the camp director, listed the names of the corps members as Tiamiyu Samuel and Shoki Gbabia.

She said the two corps members assaulted an NYSC official on Sunday and have been queried and tried by the camp’s court.

According to the statement read by the camp director, the corps members were not properly kitted while going for their meal and were challenged by the official.

She said the corps members instead dealt with the official and completely damaged his wrist watch.

“Taimuyi Samuel was queried and found of guilty of physically assaulting a camp official with the resultant damage to his wristwatch. The offense violates the section 2, article 1q of the NYSC bye law,” she said.

“Also, Samuel was found guilty of wrongful possession of another fellow corps member cap which violates section 2, article 10 of the NYSC bye law.

“The corps member also failed to provide his number tag upon demand by the platoon officer and consciously breached the undertakings of code of conduct to be of good behaviour.”

The camp director said one of the corps members, who was not remorseful over the assault, has been placed on 30-day service extension without pay.

“Shoki Gbabia has been punished for 30 days extension of service without pay,” she said.
