The Kano police command, on Saturday, said its operatives have recovered a day-old baby allegedly stolen by a couple in the state.
Abdullahi Kiyawa, Kano police spokesperson, in a statement made available to TheCable, disclosed that the child was taken away from the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital in the state.
According to the statement, the suspects reportedly threw a lavish party to celebrate the arrival of a male child in the family.
The police spokesman added that the party “triggered doubts since neighbours knew Maryam was not pregnant”.

Kiyawa said one Rabi’u Muhammad of Gayawa quarters in Ungogo LGA of Kano reported that one of his male twins born on September 7 was missing.
“Mr. Muhammad’s wife delivered of twins on the 07/09/2021 at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano, and was admitted,” the police spokesman said.
Muhammad, however, reportedly told the police that his sister in-law, who was looking after the babies at the corridor of the maternity ward, slept off, only to wake up and find that one of the twins was missing.

“Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, raised and instructed a team of detectives led by SP Daniel Itse Amah to rescue the victim and arrest the culprits,” the statement reads.
“The team immediately stormed the scene and launched a search. The hospital was sealed off and thoroughly combed, but the child could not be found immediately.
“Sustained efforts coupled with intelligence sharing led to the arrest of one Maryam Sadiq, 22 years old, and her husband, one Abubakar Sadiq, 50 years old, both of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano. The child was recovered from them in their home.
“During preliminary investigations, Maryam confessed to have taken away the baby from the hospital. She said her husband influenced her into committing the crime, as he had been longing for a male child.
“The newborn baby has been reunited with his parents.”
