Court to continue hearing of Kogi government suit against Usman Okai

A federal high court in Kogi has ruled that it will continue hearing of a suit filed by the state government against Austin Usman Okai, a social media activist.

This was despite claims of “wrong filing of proceeding” made by the defence.

The prosecution also said it would proceed to institute a charge of cybercrime and other related offences against the accused person.

Jibrin Okutepa, the defence counsel, argued against the trial.

He said Okai was petitioned by “faceless individuals and not the state government” and as such, the petition lacked merit.

Ndahi Auta, the presiding judge, however,  adjourned the case till October 12 for definite hearing.

The state government has been accused of clamping down on voices of opposition in the state.

Okai was arrested by police in the state for allegedly making inciting statements against the state government.

He was granted bail by a magistrate court, where he is also facing charges, but rearrested by security agents in the state.
