Court declares Obiora Okonkwo Anambra central senator

A federal high court sitting in Abuja has declared Obiora Okonkwo as senator representing Anambra central senatorial district.

At its sitting on Wednesday, the court ordered the immediate return of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate as the district’s senator.

The seat has remained vacant since the election tribunal sacked Uche Ekwunife who was sworn in as representative of the district in 2015.

The high court ruling followed the withdrawal of arguments against the plaintiff by other counsels involved in the matter.

John Tsoho, presiding judge, said he was prompted to grant the plaintiff’s request as there were no pending objectives to from the defendants.

The defendants include Ekwunife, the PDP; Adamu Muazu, its former chairman, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ruling is coming barely three weeks after INEC announced January 13 as date for a rerun election for the senatorial district.
