Court remands more Chinese nationals arrested in Lagos over ‘internet fraud’

The federal high court in Lagos has remanded 11 Chinese nationals at the Ikoyi and Kirikiri correctional centres over alleged internet fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the Chinese nationals on Friday over charges bordering on cyber terrorism, cybercrimes, possession of documents containing false pretence, advance fee fraud, and identity theft.

The defendants are Li Niu, Xiao Qinyun, Fu Zheng Yang, Xiao Yi, Bei Bei Linde Jun, Li Hang, Huan Livo, Wang Wei Tong Mo Ying, Gao Yang, Zebin Chen, and Yuan Zhibin.

The foreigners pleaded not guilty to the charges.

After the defendants took their pleas, the prosecution counsel—Ahmed Yerima, F.S. Mohammed, A.M. Dambuwq, and N.C. Mutfwang—asked the court for a trial date.

The counsel also asked the court to remand the suspects at the correctional centre.

Chukwujekwu Aneke, the presiding judge, adjourned the matter to March 14 and 21 for trial.

Aneke ordered that the defendants be remanded in the Ikoyi and Kirikiri correctional centres.

The defendants were among the 792 suspects arrested in Lagos by the EFCC operatives in December 2024.

The arrest was the largest single-day operation against cryptocurrency and romance scam networks by the anti-corruption agency.

The suspects were arrested at a seven-storey building in Victoria Island, Lagos.
