Court voids suspension of Ondo lawmakers

A high court in Akure, Ondo state capital, has voided the suspension of Iroju Ogundeji, deputy speaker of the assembly, and three other lawmakers.

The leadership of the state house of assembly had suspended the lawmakers over alleged “unruly behaviour” amid the impeachment proceedings against Agboola Ajayi, the deputy governor.

The affected lawmakers were among those who did not sign the impeachment notice against the deputy governor.

Aggrieved by their suspension, the lawmakers through their lawyer, Banjo Ayenakin, approached the court seeking an order against their suspension.

Delivering judgment in the suit on Friday, Ademola Bola, the presiding judge, described the suspension as “illegal, null and void and of no effect whatsoever.”

He said the suspension violates sections 90, 91, 106 and 117 of the 1999 constitution.

The judge also ordered the defendants to pay N5 million as damages to each of the plaintiffs.
