Philip Williams, president of Agege customary court in Lagos, on Thursday advised Mariam Akeem, a housewife, to be submissive to her husband who is allegedly abusive.
Akeem had gone to the court to seek dissolution of the marriage, explaining that her husband had “turned her to a punching bag”.
“My husband is irresponsible; he has turned me into a punching bag, I am no longer interested in the union,’’ she told the court.
“I want the loveless marriage dissolved.”

The woman, who resides at Abule-Egba, a Lagos suburb, said she regretted her marriage of seven years to Iyanu Moses, a businessman.
She said she had not studied him well at the time she discovered that she was pregnant.
“I want us to go our separate ways and l want him to take full responsibility for our child’s education,” Mariam said.

Doris, the petitioner’s mother, who was present in the court, said the respondent had been very troublesome.
“l tried to stop the relationship until my daughter became pregnant for him,” she said.
Iyanu, however, denied the allegations, accusing the wife of infidelity.
He pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage because he was “still in love with my wife”.

The magistrate admonished the woman to be submissive to avoid being beaten, but only asked the man to stop assaulting his wife.
The case was adjourned to November 24 for a possible mediation and reconciliation.
