COVID-19: Africa records 28,000 cases, death toll rises to 1,800

Africa has recorded 28,000 cases of COVID-19 and the death toll has risen to 1,800.

This is according to data obtained from the World Health Organisation (WHO) regional office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, on Saturday.

In a tweet, the health agency said the continent has recorded over 8,000 associated recoveries.

“Over 28,000 #COVID19 cases reported on the African continent – with over 8,000 associated recoveries & 1,300 deaths recorded,” the tweet read.

This figure is higher when compared to data shared 24 hours earlier by the health agency.

On Friday, Africa recorded 27,000 cases, with over 7,000 associated recoveries and 1,200 deaths.

The latest figure from the WHO African region COVID-19 dashboard showed that South Africa suffered the most severe outbreak, with 4, 220 cases and 79 deaths.

This is followed by Algeria with 3,127 cases and 415 deaths, while Cameroon has recorded 1,403 confirmed cases with 49 deaths.

According to the data, South Sudan, Sao Tome and Principe, as well as Mauritania are countries with the lowest confirmed cases in the region.

South Sudan has the lowest confirmed cases, five, with zero death, followed by Mauritania with seven reported cases and one death.

Sao Tome and Principe has recorded eight confirmed cases with zero death. Nigeria is currently the fifth country with the highest cases: 1, 095 confirmed cases and 32 deaths.
