COVID-19 cases in Africa exceed 150,000

COVID-19 cases in Africa have risen above 150,000 with 4,349 deaths recorded in the region.

According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), 152,182 cases have been confirmed across 54 countries on the continent as of Tuesday.

The figures show that South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria have the highest reported cases on the continent.

South Africa accounts for the highest confirmed cases with 34,357 cases and 705 deaths, followed by Egypt with 24,985 cases and 959 deaths while Nigeria trails behind with 10,578 cases and 299 deaths.

Figures from the report showed that Algeria had reported 9,513 cases and 661 deaths while Ghana recorded 8,070 cases and 36 deaths.

A total of 64,033 recoveries have also been recorded across the continent. The five top countries with the highest recovery rates are 17,291 from South Africa; 6,447 from Egypt and 5,894 from Algeria.

In Cameroon, 3,629 patients have recovered from the disease while Nigeria has recorded 3,122 recoveries.

The report showed Lesotho, Seychelles and Namibia as countries with the lowest confirmed cases in the region.

Lesotho has the lowest number of COVID-19 cases with two confirmed cases and one recovery. Seychelles has discharged all its 11 patients.

Namibia has the third-lowest figures with 25 cases and 16 recoveries.

According to the WHO situation report, the average age of confirmed cases in Africa is 39 years while the male to female infection ratio is 61.86% – 38.14%.
