COVID-19: Eredivisie cancels season without any champion, relegation

The Dutch football season has come to an end with immediate effect, after the Eredivisie abandoned the 2019/20 campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The decision follows an agreement reached over a video conference call between the Dutch FA (KNVB) and clubs on Friday.

It also means no side will be awarded the league title while relegation and promotion won’t take place.

Ajax, current champions, and AZ Alkmaar were both on 52 points, although the Amsterdam outfit were top on goal difference.

“Unfortunately, given the measures (banning large-scale gatherings) taken by the government, it became impossible to finish the 2019-2020 season,” the KNVB said in a statement .

“The KNVB is aware that whatever decision had to be made, every option would hurt somewhere.

“It will be crystal clear to everyone involved, from supporters and players to directors and referees, that public health always comes first.

“The professional football board, after consulting clubs, players and coaches, and with the approval of the Supervisory Board, has decided to stop the 2019/20 competition and to allow the allocation of European club football seats based on the current league table.

“This is in accordance with UEFA guidelines. In relation to promotion and demotion, it has been decided not to promote and not to be demoted.”

The statement added that settlement of places for Ajax and AZ in the European competition next season is subject to ratification by UEFA.

European football’s governing body will also have to okay the involvement of Feyenoord, PSV and Willem II in the Europa League.
